Valentine’s Day Survival Guide: Avoiding Love Disasters

Love it or loathe it, Valentine’s Day is a day we all reflect on the state of our romantic life. Chinese astrology offers insight into our inborn characteristics that influence what most attracts (or repels) us, and also with whom we can ultimately find lasting harmony. Among the twelve animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac, each has two ideal partners and an utterly impossible one. Most of us have experienced a love disaster, or two.

The biggest catastrophes in love are usually not with one’s most zodiacally opposed sign because the conflict is obvious immediately. Most dangerous are those “second-worst” signs whose traits spark attraction, but ultimately are incompatible in values and worldview. Below are some common examples of dangerous pairs who can expect struggle and strife when the honeymoon is over.

Rat and Sheep: Attractive to each other as opposites, but neither can understand the other’s needs. Rat’s love of society and material success will be at constant odds with the Sheep’s need for quiet introspection and spiritual exploration.

Ox and Tiger: Each admires each other’s strength and will. But, this powerful combination will drain each other’s productive energy as both signs struggle to dominate the relationship, which inevitably will be adversarial.

Rabbit and Dragon: Dragon pulls Rabbit in with irresistible magnetism, and is fascinated by Rabbit’s understated grace. In love though, Dragon will disrespect Rabbit’s cautious approach to life as weak, and Rabbit will be overpowered by Dragon’s unmitigated dominance.

Rooster and Dog: Rooster is exotic and displays a self-confidence that is naturally attractive to an idealist like Dog. Rooster won’t hesitate to take advantage of Dog, who will suffer rather than complain. Rooster will be unfulfilled as Dog grows weary and resentful.

Horse and Snake: With Horse’s charisma and Snake’s hypnotic mystery, these two can become enchanted with one another as quickly as they will torment each other. Snake will be hurt by Horse’s inconsistency of devotion and Horse will be baffled by Snake’s intense and brooding behavior.

Monkey and Pig: Monkey is drawn to Pig’s sensuality and Pig is captivated by Monkey’s entertaining personality and intelligence—at first. Monkey can’t resist pushing sensitive Pig’s buttons and Pig will respond with moodiness or depression.
